Tang Teaching Museum announces Family Saturday Programming for Spring 2016

The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College presents a series of ten Family Saturday programs to accompany the work in our exhibitions this Spring, Alma Thomas; Elevator Music 30: Critter and Guitari; and Liz Collins — Energy Field.

Held on Saturdays from February 13 through April 23 (except March 26), the programs include a hands-on art activity following a brief tour of one of the exhibitions, with all materials provided.  Several of the projects this season will include a theme of Mosaics made from of a variety of materials, in a variety of forms.

The programs run from 2:00 – 3:30 PM and are free and open to the public. Suitable for children age 5 and up along with their adult companions, the Family Saturday programs are fun and educational. Reservations are highly encouraged as space is limited and the programs are very popular.  Participants may sign up for each program up to one week in advance.

For additional information and reservations, please call the Tang’s Visitor Service Desk at 580-8080. Family Saturdays can be found on the Tang website.

The Schedule

Feb. 13: Artsy Valentines
Just in time! We will provide all kinds of materials for you to make special and unique Valentines for your friends and family.

Feb. 20:  Tissue Paper Mosaics
We will explore Alma Thomas’s beautiful paintings and her mosaic-like brush stroke technique, then make tissue paper mosaic collages inspired by her work.

Feb. 27: Bean and Seed Mosaic Mandalas
We will explore Alma Thomas’s circular paintings as well as examples of Mandalas from different cultures, then make circular mosaics using dried beans and other materials – a little bit of glitz – inside CD cases as a frame.

Mar. 5: Bubble Wrap Pillows
We will explore, discuss, and get comfy in Liz Collins’ artistic custom furniture installation Energy Field on the mezzanine, then make “pillows” out of colored bubble wrap inspired by her fabric ones.

Mar. 12: Make an Instrument to Perform in the Elevator
We will try out the instruments that Critter and Guitari have placed in the elevator and watch how they change the video on the flat screens around us, then we will make our own instruments and play ours in the elevator, too!

March 19: Moving Stripes of Color
We will make mobiles with stripes of color, using paper, cardboard, colored tape and colored wire to create movement inspired by Alma Thomas’s paintings.

Mar. 26: No Program This Week

April 2: Clay and Rhinestone Mosaic Sculptures
Using bright Model Magic clay along with rhinestones, beads, sequins, buttons and more, we will make mosaic encrusted sculptures perfect to enhance a shelf or table.

April 9: Sock Puppets
We will look at Nayland Blake’s sock monkeys on the mezzanine, then make our own sock puppets and perform them near his, using the furniture made by artist Liz Collins as our theatre.

April 16: Stalactites and Stalagmites
Inspired by Alma Thomas’s paintings, we will sculpt colorful stalactites and stalagmites out of rectangular plastic tubes and other materials.  (Low-temp glue guns will be used in this project.)

April 23: Scribbling Like Sol Lewitt
We will look at Sol Lewitt’s wall drawing in our Atrium, then create some beautifully scribbled pencil drawings – each participant will leave with a collaborative drawing made with family and friends.
