The horses are in town! This Wednesday marks the beginning of horse show season and the popular, long-running Saratoga Springs Horse Show.
The Saratoga Springs Horse Show is the first outdoor United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Premier (AA) Hunter Rated and USEF Jumper Level 4 / 3 Rated Shows in the Northeast. The show features Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation classes held in three rings. The show has a long history here in Saratoga, operating continuously since 1960.
Last year was the first time the Saratoga Springs Horse Show ran for three weeks in its 56-year history. The response was so welcomed that this year they are showing May 4 to May 22nd, with the show in full operation from Wednesday through Sunday each week.
During a week of competition, over $100,000 in prizes and awards are won by the competitors. This includes a $30,000 Grand Prixs on the first two Saturdays and a $15,000 Open Jumper Classic event on the third competition Saturday. Each Thursday will showcase the $7,500 Welcome Stake that is the qualifier for Grand Prix.
The weekends are filled with many exciting classes from Friday afternoon’s Hunter Derby, several different jumper, hunter and pony classes on Saturday, culminating on Sunday with the $2,500 Horseflight Children’s Jumper Classic and the $5,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame class.
Vendors and local organizations will have tents and tables scattered around the show grounds to share their merchandise and information to any who visits with them. Typically this would include equine related merchandise, clothing, boots and accessories, product information, Saratoga area information, etc. Visitors can also enjoy the homemade food under their popular food tent, have a glass of wine or cold beer at the Bistro and enjoy all the activity.
The show grounds are located at Gate 16 on Union Avenue, and begins at 8:00am each morning until late afternoon. Admission price is $4.00 and parking is free. For more information please go to their website www.saratogaspringshorseshow.com.
