Located in the southeastern part of Saratoga County along the west bank of the Hudson River and Champlain Canal, Mechanicville is one of the smallest cities in New York State, with an area of just 0.8 square miles and a 1990 census population of 5,249. Once recognized as an industrial river community, Mechanicville's economic backbone is now the many small shops and businesses located throughout the City. The housing stock is predominantly one and two family homes built in the early 1900's. Public services include a police department and volunteer rescue squad and fire department. City parks and playgrounds are abundant. Mechanicville has always been known as "The Friendly City".
