Saratoga County Emergency Information

Planning and Preparedness for the Flu Season and H1N1 Virus

As the impending flu season commences, the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce is reminding employers of ways to lessen the spread of the illness and ensure continuity of business operations.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has prepared recommended action steps which the Chamber is endorsing and encouraging employers to implement to protect workers.

The CDC is urging anyone with flu-like symptoms to stay home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever.  Sick employees at work should be sent home.  People should be encouraged to wash their hands often.  Everyone should cough and sneeze into a sleeve, not a hand.  Employers should clean surfaces that are frequently touched with cleaning agents that are usually used in these areas, and wherever possible employees should avoid touching other employees’ equipment.  Employees should be encouraged to get vaccinated for the seasonal and the H1N1 flu, especially those employees at a higher risk for complications, such as pregnant women and people with certain chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and asthma.

The Chamber warns employers to be prepared for increased numbers of employee absences due to illness of employees and their family members, by cross training staff.  Employees should also be encouraged to plan for child care alternatives in the event their child is ill or if their schools or child care programs are closed.  Employers should provide tissues, no-touch wastebaskets, hand sanitizing lotion, and materials to clean surfaces such as door knobs and key pads.
The CDC has prepared a booklet entitled, Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to the 2009-2010 Influenza Season.  To receive a copy of the booklet or more information contact www.flu.gov
