The National Museum of Racing and HOF

Find out why this beautiful and historic site, located across the street from Saratoga Race Course, is a favorite base for leading trainers such as Todd Pletcher and Nick Zito. Our behind the scenes tours, offered in cooperation with the New York Racing Association, are available from June to October. This walking tour covers approximately 1 mile and lasts for 1.5 hours. The cost is $10 for non-members and $5 for members. This price includes admission to the Museum after the tour. Sturdy walking shoes are suggested! For more information and reservations, call (518) 584-0400, ext. 120. For insurance reasons, tour participants must be at least 10 years old. (No children in backpacks or strollers.) Oklahoma Tours are scheduled for Saturday only June 2-October 27, 2011. In recognition of New York State Lifelong Learning Month, the Academy will present a dramatic reading of �Love & Marriage in the 19th Century,� an original play written by A.L.L. member Reena Kondo. After delving into the journals, letters and writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, his wife Lidian and friends Margaret Fuller and Henry David Thoreau and finding them to be unexpectantly revealing of their private feelings and relationships, Reena couldn't resist using their beautiful language to construct a program consisting of a series of skits and commentary. This program will be presented as a dramatic reading and will show the interaction of these sensitive individuals and the social restrictions of the 19th century. Reena has produced this play previously at the New York City Public Library. Come join A.L.L. members, college staff and members of the public to celebrate Lifelong Learning Month with this special lunchtime entertainment.

Canadian trio Sheesham and Lotus & Son are a sight to behold. The music is the main point, but the visuals put the whole thing over the top. Vaudeville era outfits, footlights that cast wild shadows across the ceiling, a homemade voice amplifier plumbed from iron pipes. They revive the early 20th Century with fiddle tunes, hokum blues songs, and ragtime string music. Sheesham plays gourd banjos and fiddles, and Lotus plays an invention called the contra-bass harmoniphoneum, which is a self-contained bass-harmonica and euphonium horn which can be used while plucking a banjo (!), and "Son" brings up the low-end on tuba.

Saratoga Springs, New York � A group of fiber artists and artisan volunteers are organizing the �A Thousand Fibers� Arts Show to celebrate the ways that fibers in all of their forms connect people and place. The show opens Saturday, September 22nd, with an artists� preview reception on Thursday, September 20th , and a curator's tour on Friday the 21st. All proceeds from the event will benefit conservation of the Foster Sheep Farm, located in the Town of Northumberland in Saratoga County. The 120-acre Foster Sheep Farm is a family-run farm raising sheep, lambs, fleeces, wool, and yarn, with a country yarn shop. Saratoga P.L.A.N. is working in conjunction with the Foster family to fulfill their commitment to ensure that their farm will always remain undeveloped and available for farming and wildlife habitat, continuing to buffer the Hudson River from pollution. Grants from Saratoga County and the Natural Resource Conservation Service are helping purchase the development rights and private funds are being raised by the volunteer fiber artisans for some the transaction costs not covered by the grants. Saratoga P.L.A.N. (Preserving Land and Nature) is a community-based, not-for-profit land conservation organization bringing people and resources together to conserve the lands we love and depend on � farms, forests, natural habitats, streams, and trail corridors. The organization provides community planning, land conservation, and educational services and programs to sustain the Saratoga County region as a great place in which to live, work, play, and visit.

Literacy volunteer tutors work with adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, and/or math skills, study for the GED, or learn English. Our learners often have a specific life goal such as finding, retaining, or improving employment, studying for a driver's license, helping a child to read, talking to the doctor, reading labels on prescription medicine, or passing the Citizenship exam ask. We offer one-to-one as well as small group instruction so you can decide wish type of tutoring would work best for you. As a new tutor, you select a "Tutor Track." You decide if you wish to tutor in Basic Literacy (Reading & Writing for native speakers), ELL (English Language Learning), Math (basic math skills and financial literacy), Wilson Reading Intensive (for adults reading at or below 2nd grade), or GED preparation. Tutor Training varies according to the "tutoring track" you choose, but most often it encompasses 15 hours of initial training and 6 hours of annual continuing education. The standard commitment period to volunteer to tutor a student is one year. Tutors meet adult learners at mutually convenient times and in public locations such as your local library. We do ask for a fee of $35 to cover training costs. Plan to schedule at least 1 hour weekly to prepare for lessons and 2 hours per week for meeting with your learner. We do recognize that our volunteers and our learners have lives outside of their literacy education commitments; thus we honor vacations, family time, etc. We just ask that you let us know in advance, so that we can create an alternative plan for your learner.

Our mission is to raise awareness about asbestos-caused Mesothelioma and to raise money for research to fight this cancer. Money raised will be donated to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Our annual event will be to kayak down the Hudson River from Schuylerville thru Stillwater and ending in Mechanicville. We are looking for people to participate in this event, either by paddling with us down the Hudson River or joining us at the end at the Mechanicville boat dock on Terminal Street. 1st launch is from the Fort Hardy Park beach in Schuylerville, NY at 8:00AM Saturday morning. Please arrive by 7:30 so we can leave on time. It's about a 16 mile paddle and will take between 5 and 6 hours. 2nd launch will be from Admiral's Marina in Stillwater, NY at 12:00PM. We will all meet at the marina in Stillwater and paddle together to the end. Join us at the 2nd annual Saratoga Horse & Tack Expo, a celebration of horses hosted by the New York Horse Park. Visit the covered vendor, used tack sale, not-for-profit and organization areas on the lower level of the Saratoga Race Course Grandstand, participate in the give-aways, a silent auction, raffles of donated items/gift certificates and watch the kids enjoy their own "fun activities" area. This year we are expanding all of these activities and adding a breed parade, a carriage parade, on track demos of a variety of Western, English and other equine activities, and pony rides for the kids. Guy McLean, Master Horseman and award winning Outback Poet from Australia and the 2011 "Road to the Horse" Co- Champion, will again be our headliner. He will be doing three shows each day, including 'starting" a young horse on Saturday and completing the process on Sunday. This event is part of the NYS Presenters Network Presenter-Artist Partnership Project with support from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency Four Seasons, Four Years tells the story of the Civil War on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The songs, performed by an all-star cast of eleven musicians, are interspersed with historical narrative specific to New York State and the New York Volunteer Regiments. The cast is comprised of Greg Artzner, Dan Berggren, Betsy Fry, Steve Fry, Reggie Harris, Terry Leonino, John Roberts, Bill Spence, Toby Stover, Susan Trump and George Wilson. The program includes Negro spirituals, shape-note hymns, marching songs, sentimental songs and songs and parodies written by 19th century writers such as Stephen Foster, George F. Root, the Hutchinson Family and Henry C. Work. The cast brings these songs alive with great gusto, emotional impact and exceptional musicianship. The production has been produced, compiled and directed by Old Songs, Inc. Executive Director Andy Spence in collaboration with the musicians.

Literacy volunteer tutors work with adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, and/or math skills, study for the GED, or learn English. Our learners often have a specific life goal such as finding, retaining, or improving employment, studying for a driver's license, helping a child to read, talking to the doctor, reading labels on prescription medicine, or passing the Citizenship exam ask. We offer one-to-one as well as small group instruction so you can decide wish type of tutoring would work best for you. As a new tutor, you select a "Tutor Track." You decide if you wish to tutor in Basic Literacy (Reading & Writing for native speakers), ELL (English Language Learning), Math (basic math skills and financial literacy), Wilson Reading Intensive (for adults reading at or below 2nd grade), or GED preparation. Tutor Training varies according to the "tutoring track" you choose, but most often it encompasses 15 hours of initial training and 6 hours of annual continuing education. The standard commitment period to volunteer to tutor a student is one year. Tutors meet adult learners at mutually convenient times and in public locations such as your local library. We do ask for a fee of $35 to cover training costs. Plan to schedule at least 1 hour weekly to prepare for lessons and 2 hours per week for meeting with your learner. We do recognize that our volunteers and our learners have lives outside of their literacy education commitments; thus we honor vacations, family time, etc. We just ask that you let us know in advance, so that we can create an alternative plan for your learner.

A fall race will give runners the opportunity to experience fall foliage in the Northeast. Vans of runners will start the new course in Saratoga Springs, run along the Hudson and Adirondack Lakes, through the region of Lake George and finish in Lake Placid, New York. Ragnar Relay encourages its participants to break the chains of traditional running races by dressing up, decorating their vans, creating life-long memories and having a blast for 30 plus hours. Each Ragnar Relay course is 180 to 200 miles long, divided into 36 legs. Each participant runs three of the 36 legs, in consecutive order. A slap bracelet acts as the relay baton that runners hand off after their section of the course. This leapfrogging pattern continues to the finish where teams are greeted with a finish line party worthy of such stamina, courage and teamwork. Hundreds of teams across the nation have joined together to take on the Ragnar challenge. Join the overnight running relay series that tests the limits of you and your friends over 200 miles. The program, Culture for Kids, aims to teach children about the arts and the importance of cultures from all over the world. Each week will focus on traditional dances, music, art, and literature from a different country. Come and listen to Bairbre McCarthy tell her wonderful stories of Ireland, learn traditional Guatemalan Dance with Carmen & Ed Contento, and listen to the fiddle played by Maura Macnamara, plus much more from many interesting countries! Cuddle Magic is a large collective of conservatory-trained musicians from Brooklyn and Philadelphia who have burst right through the walls of the academy. They have the skill and know-how to successfully mess around with conventional musical forms in a way that is playful, engaging and genuinely exciting. Put another way, they perform deftly crafted, lush, whimsical songs with wide-ranging instrumentation including strings, percussion, vibraphone, trumpet, clarinet, keyboards, guitars, and many voices. They balance the sounds of folk music with sometimes atonal harmonies, pop song-craft with rhythmic complexity, and direct emotional lyrics with dense wordplay. Each show is a unique experience, and not to be missed! Rosary Beard will open the show with their intricately intertwined, quiet, thoughtful acoustic guitar music co-written and fussed over by Hunter Sagehorn of the rock band Alta Mira and Matthew Loiacono, formerly of the Kamikaze Hearts.
