Saratoga County has always been a haven for talented artists with works ranging from equine art to hand crafted jewelry. Throughout the area, you’ll find their work in vibrant galleries and specialty boutiques.
To begin your art itinerary, a terrific first stop is at Yaddo, located on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs. The working artists’ colony is located on a large estate and was founded by Spencer and Katrina Trask. Visitors can tour the rose and sculpture gardens free of charge from 8 am to dusk. The gardens are seasonal and much of the estate remains private for the artists in residence and is not open to visitors.
While in Saratoga Springs, be sure to visit the Beekman Street Arts District in the historic West End. Several galleries and eateries stretch up and down the charming street, where you’ll find everything from oil paintings to jade carvings. After touring Beekman Street, head for Broadway where you’ll find the Saratoga County Arts Council and many galleries and boutiques in and around downtown Saratoga Springs that are sure to satisfy any art lover. Continue your art adventure by visiting The Tang Museum, located on the Skidmore College campus, just off North Broadway. The museum houses two major art galleries, features twelve exhibits per year, and boasts a permanent collection of over 4,500 works of art.
Heading southwest on Route 50 is Ballston Spa, which is home to several galleries and boutiques. This charming Victorian village hosts First Friday art exhibits which showcase the work of regional artists. Be sure to check in before planning on attending as the months this runs vary. Ballston Spa is also home to the Brookside Museum, which routinely features exhibits that focus on different aspects of Saratoga County. There are three permanent exhibit galleries and two temporary galleries that feature photography, paintings and more.
Heading east on Route 29, you’ll find the village of Schuylerville. With many new galleries and shops, Schuylerville has established itself as the newest art destination in Saratoga County.
