
2008 Travers Festival
The 2008 Travers Festival will take place from Saturday, August 16th through Sunday, August 24th. The 139th running of America's Mid-Summer Derby, The Travers Stakes, will take place on Saturday, August 23rd.

Blue Jean Makeover. New York State Museum. Give tired old jeans a wakeup call! We'll explore many ways to redesign your jeans, including adding different materials, making cuts, and reforming them into something original and unique. Backstretch Tours. Saratoga Race Course. Get a behind-the-scenes look at Thoroughbred racing with a tram tour of the oldest race course in North America and watch the Paddock Show and Starting Gate Demonstration. The first tour departs at 8am, with additional tours every 15 minutes, and the last tour departs at 9:15 am daily except Tuesdays and Travers Day. Contact: 584-6200.
Food Drive. Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. People who bring a minimum of 2 non-perishable food items to either gate will receive a free NYRA souvenir, while supporting Saratoga County EOC's local food programs.
Grant Cottage State Historic Site. Wilton. Visit the cottage where Ulysses S. Grant finished his memoirs and died in July, 1885. Admission is $4 adults, $3 students/seniors, $2 children 5-12, under 5 free. Tours are from 10am-4pm, Wednesdays through Sundays. Contact: 587-8277.
New York Lottery. On-site display in the Big Red Springs backyard area. Display will be selling lottery tickets every day except Travers Day and 8/24.
Backstretch Art Exhibit and Sale. Saratoga Race Course. View the backstretch through the eyes of the workers who care for the horses. This unique black and white photo exhibit displays the idyllic and tranquil mornings of work on the backstretch as well as the dignity and lives of the people who are the backbone of the racing industry. The exhibit is a project of Saratoga County EOC's Latino Community Advocacy Program which provides English Classes and bilingual assistance to backstretch workers in our community. "The History and Art of 25 Travers." Saratoga Race Course. Vic Zast and Greg Mongomery, North Country Books, book launch. The first book ever written specifically about the Travers, containing the Travers poster, the longest continuing series of sporting art in the world. Book sales and signing.
